The JioPhone is said to run on KAI OS, which is a forked OS version of the Firefox OS. For now, it doesn’t offer support for WhatsApp. However, according to sources, this may not be the case forever as the feature phone could support WhatsApp as and when the updates are rolled out. Unveiled at RIL’s 40th annual general meeting (AGM) by chairman Mukesh Ambani, JioPhone comes at an “effective” price of Rs 0. The company is though will be taking a refundable security deposit Rs 1500 to avoid potential misuse of the device. The amount will be refunded after a minimum period of three years.
The handset will hit the market on August 15 for beta testing. Pre-booking for JioPhone starts on August 24 and the device will be made available on first-come-first-serve basis by September.
Reliance JioPhone has its own digital assistant, along with support for voice commands. It includes support for 22 Indian languages as well.
Furthermore, the company has promised to add NFC payment support to JioPhones later this year. The feature will arrive as part of a software update. Reliance Jio is targeting the 50 crore feature phone users that have not been able to access internet due to device affordability issues.
JioPhone will be available for trials from August 15 and the pre-booking will start from August 24.
